Originally, engineers had to build their own recording equipment because it just wasn’t commercially available. That’s why they’re called engineers. Thinking that this might be a productive use of a couple of evenings, I decided to build a pair of these Classic API mic amps, which are exact clones of the original API console pre’s. So far it seems to be going more or less ok. Luckily there are detailed instructions that even a child could follow. Which is convenient, because the last time I studied electronics I was a child. So that’s the level that I’m at.
