Nutritional Therapy

What is Nutritional Therapy?

NTPs take a foundational approach, supporting health on a number of ‘pillars’, including nutrient density, digestion, blood sugar regulation, mineral and fatty acid balance and hydration. We don’t diagnose or cure disease, and are not a replacement for someone’s doctor. Rather, our goal is to put people in a position where they need their doctor less. Our world is that of the symptoms so many of us have come to normalise, to see as ‘just part of life’ – IBS, heartburn, fatigue, joint pain, constipation, poor immune function and autoimmune conditions, cravings, inability to lose fat, dehydration, irritability or shakiness if a meal is delayed, and so on. We will ‘meet a client where they are’, and guide them, in manageable steps, towards better systemic health.
By applying these principles to myself as well as to my clients, rather than declining through my 40’s as we’ve been conditioned to expect, I’ve found that I’m stronger, sharper and functioning more fully than ever. I have been able to address my symptoms, to heal my gut, change my body composition and manage the inevitable stressors that life throws my way. I can teach you to do the same.

What does this look like?

Recommendations could include certain food swaps or substitutions, a rebalancing of macronutrients, the sharing of recipes and cooking techniques, food or supplement-based support for specific micronutrients, guided exclusion diets and reintroductions, as well as targeted recommendations relating to lifestyle factors like sleep, stress management and movement.
I avoid simply meal planning for clients because that doesn’t provide them with the knowledge to move on without my help. Instead, I prefer to work with clients to identify the stumbling blocks in their current approach, and provide strategies for implementing the improvements that will serve them in the long term.
It might be that I suggest the involvement of a doctor or another practitioner to ensure that your specific issues are tackled from every angle.

So how is it structured?

The Nutri-Q system will send you an access code to your personal dashboard, where you’ll find some forms waiting – an Initial Interview Questionnaire (basic details and some history), a Nutritional Assessment (a raft of tick-box questions that help to identify symptoms and patterns) and a Food and Mood Journal. The journal is a record of your intake for a few days, with notes on how you feel, your energy levels and digestion. It’s a bit of an undertaking, but it’s incredibly useful for both of us. People often spot connections between their food and symptoms that they hadn’t previously noticed. Finally, there’s also the typical disclaimer which says that I’m not a doctor.
Once the paperwork is done, we will have an Initial Interview (60-90 minutes, phone call or in person) to clarify any points that either of us want to raise. I will then put together a set of recommendations before a second meeting (60-90 minutes) to go through those, and to establish which, if any, you’re ready to try. After a few weeks we would meet again to follow this process up (30-60 minutes), making any changes required. That follow-up cycle might happen a number of times. We’d aim to work on this together for a period of 3 months initially.
